For
us as ARBU to be able to gain reasonable vehicular access to the coastal zones
of the Elephant Coast we will need to convince the minister and his associates
that
- The
ecological damage done by motor vehicles to the coastal zone is minimal and
within acceptable limits
- Domestic
Tourism associated with the use of the coastal zone is sustainable
- Domestic
Tourism associated with the use of the coastal zones of the Elephant Coast
will benefit the local populations of Umkhanyakude
- Domestic
Tourism associated with the use of the coastal zone is in the interests of
promoting the world heritage values and status of the park
- The
iSimangaliso Wetlands park will loose some of its value should motor vehicle
access to the regions coastal zones be denied
- Our
economic rights have been violated by the current legislation which
prohibits motor vehicle access to the coastal zones of the elephant Coast
and that
- the
local residents economic benefit from motor vehicle access to our coastal
zones in terms of section 24 of the South African Constitution is the
rather substantial sum of money spent by Domestic tourists who use our
coastal zones for their personal recreational purposes.
- The
local residents of Umkhanyakude District Municipality are serious about
this issue, and are in the process of taking legal action to have our
economic rights restored and enforced in terms of the constitution.
- Less
restrictive measures should be put in place which would allow the local
residents to establish an organization such as ARBU (the Association of
Recreational Beach Users to control and monitor access to our coastal
zones for the purposes of recreational use of these coastal zones as is
required in terms of the first ROD to close our coastal zones to motor
vehicle traffic.
